Kawangware Open Forum Day on 'Parenting'
The CCP staff and the Kawangware guardians had an open forum day on March 6th 2009 at Full Gospel Church, Kawangware. The meeting focused on parenting in relation to the sponsored children’s conduct and the guardians’ responsibilities. The CCP Social Workers voiced their concerns over the challenges they were facing with the children as well as the guardians. Some of the challenges experienced from the side of children included indiscipline, carelessness, peer pressure and wrong company leading to degradation of good morals. On the other hand, irresponsibility, ignorance, negligence, overprotection and lack of advice on the part of guardians led to the increase of the vises in some of the children. Thereafter, guardians grouped according to their Social Workers and came up with the following solutions over the concerns raised: develop good relationship with their children as this would enhance openness, take parenting responsibility, know their children’s friends, discipline their children incase of any mistake, provide guidance to their children, act as role models, visit their children in school to know their performance, treat their children equally, be observant to their children’s behavior, avoid overprotecting their children, and teach them to be responsible people in the society. Sellah Nafula, the Director of operations reminded guardians of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the guardians and the organization and stated that the MOU should be strictly followed as signed by the guardians for the improvement of the children’ lives. She said that CCP existed to empower the sponsored families with services and trainings. They were therefore expected to implement the knowledge learnt to help them bring up their children in a disciplined and responsible manner. In the afternoon, each sponsored family received a bag of food.
